This is the second book in the excellent series West Country Trilogy. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all opinions expressed herein are mine. The novel ends on a cliffhanger, so I'll definitely be revisiting the world of these 18th century Cornish smugglers. Meanwhile, Isaac makes plans for his family, but battles with his conscience as he's drawn to an old friend.Īs the tale unravels, it becomes clear that not everything and certainly not everyone are what they seem. Scarlett finds herself working with the enemy and facing a man who perhaps understands the wildness in her better than most. We also meet new characters, who become important to the story. Some of the supporting characters from the first novel come more to the fore in this book.

This novel is peopled with strong characters, each with their own stories, lies and mysteries. Isaac has no notion that his father is still alive, but someone close to him does and is terrified of long-buried secrets coming to life. The main plot swirls around their missing father, Jacob, and the real story of why he abandoned his young family, leaving them to believe he drowned at sea. Her brother Isaac is making plans to escape the never-ending debt he inherited from his father. Headstrong Scarlett has forced Asher Hales across Cornwall at knifepoint to find the father she grew up believing was dead. Everyone is hiding something from someone.

In the second book of this series, secrets are tumbling out of dark places at a rate of knots.
